Daring Club for Girls

On June 25 we had our second meeting for The Daring Club for Girls. Our theme that day was games. We started off by talking about notable women athletes such as Mary Lou Retton and Dorothy Hamill. Then we read the picture book Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae. We discussed the importance of trying your best and that it is important to practice when you want to improve in something you are learning.

We had a special guest, Matt McEachern, who helped teach us how to juggle. The girls practiced juggling with scarves and tennis balls. I was also going to teach them how to hula hoop but they all knew how to do so already. Then, as if to live up to the title of the club, the girls dared to try juggling while hula hooping. This proved to be a challenge but a few of them were able to do it. Afterwards we went outside and played hopscotch. As it got warmer outside, we decided to round out the morning inside with a game called Marble Toe Pick-Up. The game is played exactly how it sounds: pick up marbles as fast as you can with your toes. The player that picks up the most marbles in thirty seconds wins. I think this might have been the girls favorite game of the day! They even came up with several variations to play as well.

  1. Hello! My name is Brad Hendershot and I’m a new science teacher at Excelsior Academy. I’m interested in visiting your store on August 5th for the open house. Thanks for putting together the event! Have you heard back from any of the other Excelsior employees?
